Indian Creek Middle School 2005-06 School Improvement Plan

 

READING

Goal:  Increase all students’ ability to achieve a higher reading level through the use of learned reading strategies applied to the text and other ready material in all classes.

Rationale:  According to District Strategic Plan, 90% of all students will meet and/or exceed State Standards for reading and 30% will exceed as measured by ISAT.

Action Steps:

  1. Literacy Committee will increase use and instruction of strategies during Team and Early Release Days.  Introduce and teach staff one new strategy per quarter; three strategies per year with fourth quarter for implementing most effective strategy and evaluation.
  2. Maintain 115 minutes of DEAR reading time each week
  3. Develop and implement a variety of informal independent reading assessments beyond AR testing
  4. Maintain Title Teacher at 100% at the Middle School for services at 6th, 7th, and 8th grade

 

WRITING

Goal:  Increase student writing variety to engage multiple audiences.

Rationale:  According to District Strategic Plan, 90% of all students will meet and/or exceed State Standards for reading and 30% will exceed as measured by ISAT.

Action Steps: 

1.        Continue to use pre and post tools to look at student writing growth and development

2.        Create content specific grade appropriate rubrics and provide teacher inservice to build establish expectations and scoring consistency

3.        Look at student work to evaluate teaching and learning

 

MATH

Goal:  Demonstrate and apply  knowledge of numbers, numeration, operations, patterns, ratios, and proportions with speed, accuracy and functionality.

Rationale:  Move 4.7% from “Below” to “Meets” and increase “Exceeds” to  30% on the ISAT Test.

Action Steps:

1.        Increase use and consistency in expectations of note taking as engagement activity

2.        Purchase classroom set of calculators and teach usage

3.        Use “Extended Response” activities and develop scoring rubric to define expectations and increase scoring consistency

4.        Monitor student progress and use Resource time to reteach concepts/skills and assist struggling math students

 

AFFECTIVE EDUCATION

Goal:  To promote positive social and emotional growth through developmentally appropriate programming.

Rationale:  Middle Schools need to be responsive to the needs of the whole child

Action Steps:

1.        Develop and implement character trait recognition program

2.        Implement grade specific Advisory curriculum

3.        Provide prevention programming to students in the areas of domestic/relationship violence

4.        Increase community recognition of student achievement through local newspapers

 

SCHOOL WELLNESS PLAN

Goal:  To investigate the Federal/State mandates and components of the School Wellness Plan

Rationale:  Schools have been charged with the responsibility to educate young people about improving and maintaining lifelong habits of good health.

Action Plan: 

1.        Establish specific learning goals and objectives for physical education

2.        Evaluate lunch recess as a viable and worthy time to encourage physical activity

3.        Develop nutrition curricula and infuse across the curriculum

4.       Evaluate food offering at school sponsored events
