Get Walking
Service Learning is an important middle school value, and we are excited about our participation again this year in the 6th Annual WALK for N.I.C.E. This WALK has been selected for our spring community service project. ICMS participates in two community service projects a year. We look forward to a great turn-out from our ICMS students and staff, and a beautiful Sunday afternoon walk through scenic Shabbona State Park on Sunday, May 4.
We selected the 6th Annual WALK for N.I.C.E. (Neighbors In Christ Ecumenical) Food and Clothing Center in Lee. We will hold a two-week service project with an ending all school assembly. Everyone will be receiving a walkers envelope with the WALK information, a NICE Story, and donors sheet.
As many of you know, the N.I.C.E. Food and Clothing Center has been assisting families in the Indian Creek School District and Paw Paw School District for the past 20 years. Many of you have volunteered your time and donated food, clothing, household wares, toys and money.
Students will be participating for $1 a day in fun theme day activities: Each day during the two week period, there will be theme and activities centered around the theme.
The second week students last year wore something each day that lead them to Friday when they all wore their WALK gear ready for the Sunday afternoon stroll. Monday was favorite summer outfit day, Tuesday—sunglasses day, Wednesday—rain gear day, Thursday—water bottle day, and Friday—dress for the WALK day.
Students were reminded every day why we will walk for N.I.C.E. Not just for the many prizes that will be given to students who raise the most money for N.I.C.E. but to help provide much needed food and other services that N.I.C.E. provides hundreds of families in our area.
Families are encouraged to join us in the WALK through beautiful Shabbona State Park. Step-off will be at 1:30 PM from the Indian Creek High School parking lot. You can walk 1/2 mile or the full 4 miles. There will be emergency personnel, DeKalb County Sheriff patrol, and food and drink stations along the route. Students will be allowed to walk without their parents, but they must have the bottom box of their walkers sheet signed by the parents giving permission and relieving ICMS or the N.I.C.E. Center of any liability. We will walk because:
N.I.C.E. served 4,521 adults and children on 52 Saturdays in 2007
N.I.C.E. distributes over $100,000 worth of food annually.
N.I.C.E. distributed over 3000 school supplies to students in July and Aug.
In 2007 over 95 families were able to enjoy a special Christmas because of N.I.C.E. and all the people who provided gifts through the Christmas room.
Every penny given to the N.I.C.E. Center is used for our neighbors in need.
N.I.C.E. is operated by faithful dedicated volunteers from 15 local churches who care.
